Two things move great-power leader meetings: leverage and logistics. On leverage, Beijing is still using TikTok, export controls, and market access as bargaining chips. On logistics, Xi’s foreign travel cadence is sparse and tightly scripted, with long lead times and deliverables baked in. Any 2025 face-to-face requires both capitals to agree on tangible outcomes and optics.

Trump publicly claimed he would see Xi at a regional summit in South Korea at the end of October, and that he would visit China in the early part of next year. He added that Xi would come to the United States at an appropriate time.
